The flower fair usually starts from three days before the Spring Festival and the New Year’s Eve is the climax of Guangzhou Flower Fair, when crowds of people surge to the street to attend this happy feast. Guangzhou people likes to call the flower market as flower market and they always invite their families and relatives to “visit the flower street” during the flower fair period of Guangzhou.

Flower Fair The origin of flower fair, as a traditional folk culture of Guangzhou, can be traced back to 500 years ago to Ming Dynasty. And the forming of Guangzhou flower market is closely connected with the climate, history and culture of Guangzhou.

Guangzhou is a historic city of China with more than 2200 years of history. As the birthplace of Marian Silk Road, the transportation of Guangzhou is quite developed, making Guangzhou a huge market with large demand of flowers. And the formation of the Guangzhou flower market can trace back to Ming Dynasty when Four Markets of Guangdong were gradually formed: Medicine Market of Luofushan, Incense Market of Dongguan, Flower Market of Guangzhou and Pearl Market of Lianzhou. The flower market, especially, is the largest and most influential one, which was also held in the evening and had relatively fixed position.

Custom of Flower Fair of Guangzhou

The large-scale flower fair of Guangzhou has been formed since year 1920, mainly held from December 28 (three days before the New Year’s Day) to Chinese New Year Eve. And the scale and range area of the flower market is becoming larger and larger. The fixed position to hold Guangzhou Flower Fair is prepared a week before the New Year’s Eve and pergolas, stalls are built for the flower growers. The annual Guangzhou Flower market can be found in the eight major flower markets of Guangzhou, including Xihu and Jiaoyu Road in Yuexiu District, Liwan North Road of Liwan District, Jiangnan West Road of Haizhu Area, etc.

When the Spring Festival of China approaches, the streets and fair in Guangzhou bustle with people shopping and florists from suburban areas setting up temporary shacks for the flower fair of Guangzhou. The streets are decorated with fragrant and beautiful fresh flowers, golden tangerines, and elegant miniature landscapes, seeming like rivers of flowers in the distance.

During the Guangzhou Flower Fair, huge crowds of people surge to the street to appreciate flowers. It is customary for most of the families to visit the fair after the reunion dinner on the Chinese New Year's Eve and buy a potted tree with tangerines hanging on it. The tangerine symbolizes good luck and wealth to the local people and the chrysanthemum symbolizes longevity. Whether it is a "getting rich" tree, cherry blossoms, or sweet olive plumes, plants and flowers all signify the blossoming of the New Year. This is an area of strong visual impact and cultural significance for the visitors. In the fair, there will be traditional Chinese performances, face painters, painting calligraphers, etc.
